The Return of R5-D4

Updated: Feb 5, 2023

R5-D4 is a Kenner action figure released in 1978 as part of the original Star Wars toy line. It was designed to look like the Astromech droid from the movie, and it quickly became a hit with fans. Initially, it wasn't as popular as R2-D2, but it has gained a cult following due to its unique design and features. This action figure is important because it helped shape the look of the Astromech droids we know and love today. It's also a great example of how a toy can become more than just a piece of plastic. It has inspired generations of Star Wars fans and collectors, making it an important part of the Star Wars legacy.

R5-D4 was a droid featured in the 1977 movie Star Wars: A New Hope. He was Luke Skywalker's first choice to buy on Tatooine but was deemed faulty due to a bad motivator. So R2-D2 ended up being sold to Owen Lars instead.

Some people choose not to restore or repair their Star Wars action figures, but it's not necessarily out of fear that it will hurt their value. On the contrary, fixing or correcting an action figure can increase its value if done correctly. Therefore, it's essential to research the best techniques for restoring or repairing action figures before attempting to do so. Additionally, it's necessary to consider the figure's condition before deciding whether to restore it.

When considering the condition of a Star Wars action figure, it would be a candidate for restoration if it has sustained severe damage such as cracking, discoloration, or missing parts. Restoration could also be considered if the figure has been exposed to extreme temperatures, humidity, or other elements that can cause damage over time. However, it is essential to note that restoration should only be done if necessary and not just for aesthetic purposes.

Here are a few pics of R5-D4 before the restoration. I believe he was the perfect candidate.
