Story Synopsis
When Frank and Joe Hardy narrowly avoid being hit by a speeding driver with bright red hair, they have no idea they’re about to embark on their first major case. After their friend Chet Morton’s prized jalopy is stolen and a robbery occurs at the imposing Tower Mansion, the Hardy boys find themselves racing to clear the name of their friend Perry Robinson’s father, who stands accused of the theft. Following clues that lead them all the way to New York City, the boys track down the mysterious “Red” Jackley, who makes a cryptic deathbed confession about hiding the loot “in the old tower.” But which tower did he mean? The answer will surprise both the Hardy boys and readers alike!
This 1959 edition offers several notable differences from the original 1927 text. The revised version features expanded female characters (including Mrs. Hardy and Chet’s sister Iola), updated dialogue with 1950s slang, a more streamlined plot, and greater involvement of the boys in the investigation. While the original had the boys building a bomb to delay a rival investigator, the revised version tones this down to setting a fire, reflecting changing sensibilities about children’s literature.
