Meeting William Shatner

Meeting William Shatner was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience for Julie and me. The event took place at the magnificent Fisher Theater in Detroit—a venue as grand and elegant as any I’ve ever visited, with its ornate architecture and timeless charm setting the perfect scene for a night to remember. After a special screening of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Shatner took the stage, and the room was instantly filled with his energy and humor.

For nearly two hours, he entertained the audience with stories from his decades-long career, sharing behind-the-scenes moments from Star Trek and mixing in plenty of witty commentary that had everyone laughing. There was something magical about hearing him speak in person, surrounded by the beauty of the Fisher Theater, alongside my wife. The whole evening felt both intimate and larger-than-life—a perfect blend of nostalgia, admiration, and joy that I’ll always treasure.

Meeting Matthew Lillard

Meeting Matthew Lillard at Galaxy Con in Columbus was a real treat, especially for our family of devoted Scooby-Doo fans. While I knew he was popular, I was still surprised to see that his line stretched farther than almost anyone else’s—full of fans from Scream, Five Nights at Freddy’s, and, of course, plenty of Scooby-Doo enthusiasts like us.

For us, the connection to Matthew was all about Scooby-Doo and the countless hours spent together as a family watching the adventures of Shaggy, Scooby, and the gang. Those episodes brought so much laughter into our home, and meeting the voice behind Shaggy made all those memories come flooding back. Matthew was energetic and kind, taking the time to banter with fans and even slipping into Shaggy’s voice for a quick “zoinks!” It felt like meeting a piece of our family’s past come to life, making the experience even more joyful and meaningful. The Scooby fandom was definitely well represented—and we were proud to be part of it.

Meeting Bill Farmer

Meeting Bill Farmer at Animate! in Columbus was an absolute delight, especially since I got to share the experience with my daughter. Bill, the voice behind Goofy and so many other Disney favorites, spent about ten minutes chatting with us—something that felt incredibly generous in the middle of a busy convention. He was down-to-earth, genuinely interested in our stories, and, to my daughter’s delight, slipped effortlessly in and out of Goofy’s voice throughout our conversation.

What made this moment even more special was the connection it had to our family’s memories. As my children grew up, sharing all the old Mickey and Goofy cartoons was a beloved tradition in our house. Those afternoons and mornings spent laughing together over Goofy’s antics were some of our happiest times. Getting to meet the person who brought that character to life felt like coming full circle—a way to thank him, in spirit, for all those joyful memories. Bill’s warmth and enthusiasm made the golden age of Disney feel close and present again, and I left the encounter feeling both nostalgic and grateful.

Meeting George Takei

Meeting George Takei was a moment I had looked forward to for years. I made sure to dress up for the occasion, wanting to honor someone I’ve admired for so long. As a longtime fan of his, I follow his Oh My! channel and genuinely appreciate his quick wit and unique sense of humor—it always brightens my day. When I finally approached him, George greeted me with his signature warmth and that famous, booming laugh.

We chatted briefly about his work, and I mentioned how much his book, "They Called Us Enemy," resonated with me. He seemed genuinely touched, and we talked about its continued relevance in today’s world. The conversation was short, but George’s kindness and sincerity made it unforgettable. It’s not every day you meet someone whose influence has stretched across generations, and George Takei exceeded every expectation: thoughtful, gracious, and truly appreciative of his fans.

Meeting Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner, and Denise Crosby

Meeting Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner, and Denise Crosby at Galaxy Con in Columbus was a real highlight for us. From the moment we approached their table, each of them greeted us with genuine smiles and an easygoing attitude that made the whole interaction feel special. Jonathan Frakes was particularly charismatic while Brent Spiner continued to joke around with his friends. Denise Crosby, who I rarely see at events, was especially gracious and took time to chat with us and other fans, making the photo op feel even more meaningful.

The energy at the convention was upbeat and welcoming, and meeting this trio added something unforgettable to the experience. Getting a photo with all three together—especially with Denise, who doesn’t often make appearances—felt like a rare treat. It was a great reminder of why these events are so memorable: the warmth and enthusiasm of both the guests and the fans create moments you want to hold on to long after the con is over.

Meeting Walter Koenig

Meeting Walter Koenig was one of my favorite experiences. We met him at the Star Trek Original Series Set Tour in Ticonderoga, which was incredible—I highly recommend it for any Star Trek fan. What made it truly special was that we got to spend about an hour just hanging out with Walter. We all sat around the captain’s ready room table, listening to his stories. Walter was warm, friendly, and open to every question, making everyone feel welcome.

There’s one moment that stands out and always makes me smile. While we were in sick bay, Walter leaned against one of the medical beds. These beds are designed to pivot upright, but he didn’t realize it. Another visitor and I casually leaned on the head of the bed to keep it from tipping while Walter continued to talk. It seemed like a small gesture at the time—just what you do to help someone out. But as Walter spoke for another half hour, the two of us had to remain pretty still, making sure the bed stayed put. Eventually, we moved on to the science lab, and no one was any the wiser.

Meeting James and Oliver Phelps

Meeting James and Oliver Phelps was pure fun, and honestly, a dream come true for my daughter and me as lifelong Harry Potter fans. From the moment we saw them, they exuded the same mischievous, lighthearted energy as their on-screen characters. Both brothers greeted everyone with big smiles and genuine enthusiasm, making the entire experience feel personal and special.

What really made the encounter memorable was how down-to-earth and approachable James and Oliver were. My daughter and I arrived in our own wizard robes, wands at the ready, and they immediately commented on our outfits, asking which houses we belonged to and sharing a laugh about our love for the wizarding world. It felt more like chatting with old friends than meeting celebrities. We even swapped stories about visiting Universal Orlando’s version of Hogwarts and Diagon Alley. The whole interaction was relaxed and joyful, and I left feeling even more connected to the magic of Harry Potter.

Meeting Jodi Benson

Jodi Benson was very friendly. I have always been a Little Mermaid fan. I attended a Q & A with her and Christopher Daniel Barnes (Prince Eric). I did get a pretty good surprise at the end of the Q & A - she sang "Part of your World". We were not allowed to record.....something about Disney Jail? But I did get a few snippets.

Meeting Gates McFadden

Meeting Gates McFadden at Galaxy Con was a truly memorable experience for both me and my daughter. From the moment we approached her, she greeted us with genuine warmth and curiosity, immediately putting us at ease. What stood out most was how she took the time to engage with my daughter, asking thoughtful questions about her college life and interests, as if she were speaking with an old friend.

At one point, Gates noticed we were struggling to get a good photo and, with a big smile, offered a few tips on taking the perfect selfie. She even demonstrated how to hold the phone for the best angle, turning a simple moment into a personal and fun lesson. The entire interaction felt relaxed and unhurried—she made us feel like we were the only people in the room, despite the busy convention atmosphere. It was a brief encounter, but the kindness and authenticity Gates showed left a lasting impression on both of us.
