Star Wars Role Playing Games

The Star Wars Role Playing Game has a rich history spanning multiple publishers and editions since its inception in 1987. West End Games initially developed the game using their d6 system, which was known for its simplicity and flexibility. This version was popular throughout the late 1980s and 1990s, contributing significantly to the expansion of the Star Wars Expanded Universe.

In 2000, Wizards of the Coast acquired the license and released a new version based on the d20 system, aligning it closely with their Dungeons & Dragons 3rd Edition mechanics. This iteration saw several updates, including the Revised Core Rulebook in 2002 and the Saga Edition in 2007. The Saga Edition, in particular, was well-received, winning the2008 ENnie Award for Best Game.

Fantasy Flight Games took over the license in 2012, introducing a narrative dice system that emphasized storytelling. They developed three core rulebooks: Edge of the Empire (2013), Age of Rebellion (2014), and Force and Destiny (2015). Each focused on different aspects of the Star Wars universe, from outer rim scoundrels to Rebel operatives and Force users.

In2020, the license transitioned to Edge Studio, a subsidiary of Asmodee. Edge Studio has committed to supporting the existing game line through reprints and new supplements. As of September 2024, they have reprinted several core rulebooks and sourcebooks, including Dawn of Rebellion, Rise of the Separatists, and Starships and Speeders. The company has also reissued the Beginner Games for all three core rulelines.

The game mechanics across these editions have varied, but all aim to capture the essence of the Star Wars universe. The current system uses specialized dice with symbols that determine success, failure, and narrative complications, allowing for dynamic storytelling.

Throughout its various incarnations, the Star Wars Role Playing Game has covered multiple eras of the Star Wars timeline, from the Old Republic to the Galactic Civil War, with limited support for the Sequel Trilogy era. The game continues to evolve, offering players the opportunity to immerse themselves in the vast Star Wars galaxy through tabletop roleplaying.
