The Twilight Zone Radio Drama: The Man In The Bottle (S01E04)
"Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Castle, gentle and infinitely patient people whose lives have been a hope chest with a rusty lock and a lost set of keys. But in just a moment that hope chest will be opened and an improbable phantom will try to bedeck the drabness of these two people's failure-laden lives with the gold and precious stones of fulfillment..."
In this classic tale of caution and cosmic irony, Arthur Castle (played by Emmy-award winner Ed Begley Jr.) is a kind-hearted but completely broke antique dealer running a failing pawn shop alongside his wife, Edna. Out of pure pity, Arthur buys an old, discarded wine bottle from a destitute neighborhood woman for a few dollars.
To their shock, the couple quickly learns the bottle isn't empty—it houses a genuine genie who grants them four wishes. However, the genie leaves them with a chilling, prophetic warning: every wish has its repercussions, so think carefully before you speak.
Inevitably, human nature takes over. After using their first wish to prove the genie's power by fixing a broken glass display cabinet, the Castles use their second wish to ask for one million dollars in cash. But the joy of sudden wealth is instantly shattered when an IRS agent arrives, presenting them with a massive tax bill and leaving them with a meager five dollars.
Desperate to escape his meager life and possess absolute control, Arthur uses his third wish to become the leader of a modern, powerful country—someone who cannot be voted out of office. In a terrifying twist of fate, he opens his eyes to find himself transformed into Adolf Hitler, trapped in a claustrophobic Berlin bunker during the final, desperate hours of World War II. As a loyal officer hands him a vial of cyanide, Arthur must use his final wish just to survive, learning the ultimate lesson that absolute power comes at the highest price of all.
A brilliant audio reimagining of Rod Serling's classic television script, this radio drama relies on masterful sound design and stellar voice acting to bring the claustrophobia of the bunker and the tragic ironies of the human heart right into your headphones. Check your deposits, watch what you wish for, and prepare to enter... The Twilight Zone.
